Fine Art Scanning | Jerry Siegan Fine Art
Fine Art Reproduction Scanning - Your art, my photographic skills.
For the ultimate in Fine Art Reproduction scanning, I use a Betterlight Scanback in a 4x5 camera originally made for film holders.
Many years ago I purchased this Betterlight Scanback to photograph swatches of fabric. Unfortunately, Kodak no longer manufactures the sensor and the scanback was discontinued. So the scanback is a lot like me: old, slow and able to produce quality that you just don’t get any more. The Betterlight Scanback is simply the best tool there is for scanning large pieces of art that do not fit in a standard flatbed scanner. Every major Art Museum in the world either uses it or wishes they had one.
There is nothing else like it for photographing artwork. There is a sensor (chip) that travels along the film plane scanning one line at a time. This results in a large image with no moire patterns, unmatched detail and resolution. Another advantages is unlike a flatbed scanner where the lighting is "flat", this is a photographic process. So if your artwork has any texture the scan will retain some of that texture.
If you want to print or reproduce your artwork, this is by far the best way to go!
Scanning for Web
If your goal is to reproduce artwork for web only, a full frame Sony mirrorless camera is a more appropriate and affordable solution. It takes much less time to photograph the artwork as the image is captured instantly with just a snap of the shutter and the quality is excellent.
Pricing
My rate is $100 per hour. The average price for a Betterlight scan of a 24”x30” unframed artwork is 1.5 hours. The cost per piece decreases as you have more pieces of similar sizes, since the setup, which takes time, doesn’t need to be repeated. Scanning with a Sony DSLR, the rate remains the same, but the image recording time is about half. You can reach me through the Contact Form or my telephone number, which is on the form. We can discuss your project.

Scan Pricing:
Betterlight - $100 per hour. Betterlight Scanning takes approximately twice as long as scanning with a Sony Full Frame Mirrorless DSLR. The average price for a small piece is $100 per piece. For a larger piece, which is anything over 20"x30" the average price is $150. This is the way to go if you want to reproduce your artwork for fine art reproductions.
Sony - $100 per hour. Scanning is much quicker with a DSLR. The average per piece price is about $50. The quality is excellent and is most appropriate for websites.
